Redefining Balance started as a collaboration to blend Slacklining & AcroYoga into a practice that embodied trust, connection and balance in new shapes and forms through experiences outdoors in nature.
The mission was to introduce students to new ways of thinking with regards to balance not only on a line or another person’s feet but to also tune in to our balance as a whole with each each other and the environment in which we live, offering insight and incentive to preserve our natural outdoor playgrounds.
Overall the vibe on our retreats is chill and the people involved are passionate and inspired to try new things, tune in to the surroundings and most importantly, have fun…
Created in 2007, Redefining Balance started as a 2 hr slacklining and AcroYoga workshop and quickly expanded to a week-end and week long retreat with a wide range of adventure offerings outdoors including rock climbing, surfing, mountain biking, swimming and white water rafting with Thai Massage workshops to help keep us put together and recharged! Our retreats create a chill community vibe of like minded individuals looking to have fun in amazing settings.
In 2014, Redefining Balance joined up with professional climber and North Face Athlete Heidi Wirtz of Earth Play Retreats to create Redefining Play and offer two climbing focused retreats in Moab, UT and Puerto Rico. These retreats are ideal for anyone interested in getting several days of climbing in to explore different rock formations, styles of climbing and, when appropriate, to learn the basics of building anchors and lead climbing. With a crew of strong climbers to help get ropes up on more advanced climbs the Redefining Play retreats help students of all backgrounds to take their climbing to the next level while learning technique alongside a professional climber.
Throughout each retreat there is an underlying eco – conscious theme and practices are brought into the retreats to help raise awareness about sustainability, preservation and reducing our carbon foot print through education about sustainable day to day practices. Some of our retreats also include organized events including beach clean ups, community outreach projects and our infamous eco challenge where students are given the opportunity to see how little trash they can personally create in one week while competing for donated prizes from our sponsors.

Pay It Forward
5% of the proceeds from all Redefining Balance retreats are donated to organizations & non-profits working to preserve our climbing, surfing & slacklining areas. Some of the organizations we have donated to include Surfrider Foundation and Access Fund and recently we started giving this 5% to local climbing inititaives to support bolt and anchor maintenance in the areas we climb in during the retreats.
In 2015 we donated proceeds from Redefining CANADA to help with bolting initiatives in the country and the Redefining Play PUERTO RICO supported some of our favorite local climbers (Rossano & Eda) and their company Adventuras Tierra which takes donations to fund bolting & rebolting established climbing areas on the island of Puerto Rico.
And after our first Redefining Balance NEW PALTZ retreat we were excited to find out about and support the initiatives of local Gunks climbers associated with the Gunks Climbers Coalition and the Gunks App who are going out and replacing worn anchors, rusted pitons & bolts and establishing safer (not on old trees) rappelling stations for the most popular climbs in the Gunks. Keep up the good work guys!
